Both in device control and in the acquisition and processing of measurement data, the PlantVital®5000 is a fully software-supported measurement system for recording the oxygen balance in primary production chlorophyll-bearing species. It measures the change in oxygen concentration or oxygen partial pressure in relation to the lighting status at a specified temperature. The measurement chamber keeps the temperature stable, and temperature can be freely selected in the range 5°C to 45°C in 1k steps with a measurement accuracy of 0.2 K. The lighting uses a luminescence diode in the red and optionally in the yellow spectral range. In the standard version (see photos) a very small amount of the material being studied (leaf, conifer needle, algae on carrier etc.) with an area of 10 to 50 mm² is sufficient to receive an evaluable signal from the targets.
Special versions of the device series are available. In particular these include the following versions:- To measure targets in the form of suspensions (modified target chamber);
- With software-controlled light intensity (PAR) in the range up to 2,000 µmol/m²s; and
- Combination of the devices with a photometer to determine the chlorophyll concentration of the targets.
Compared to other methods, this has the qualitative advantage of evaluating the entire photosynthetic apparatus of the target and representing this as an integral measurement result. In particular it is important to point out the substantially improved consistency and measurement accuracy when determining the environmental parameters of the target in the product presented here. The instrument has a mechanism for calibrating the sensor. The simple use and potential to examine up to 3 samples in parallel using the standard version noticeably minimises the time required to conduct a measurement. Apart from what in toxicological terms is a completely harmless physiological solution to prevent artefacts during the measurement process, no chemicals are required during the preparation and implementation of measurements.
The company’s own PlantVital®5000 operating and evaluation software provides various ways of visualising and evaluating the data.
A data cable is used for simple transfer of the measurement data to a computer. The measurement curve obtained in this manner clearly indicates the dynamics of photosynthetic oxygen absorption and release. The devices in the PlantVital®5000 range are tough measurement instruments, therefore minor errors in handling are not a problem for the device. Since measurements can be conducted quickly and require little expenditure on materials, the device can and is commonly used for university study.
There are three different device models in the standard version which differ according to the number of measurement chambers. Depending on the device model, comparison or follow-up measurements can be conducted at the same time or in sequence in up to 3 measurement chambers. The amount of time required to record a reading for high quality evaluation is 10 to 15 minutes. For this reason it is recommended that a multiple channel measurement system be used if there are large numbers of specimens.
