Patented lysimeter sampling technology for organic soils

Patent No.: 10 353 485; 10 2011 006374 for organic soils and bogs

With our patented lysimeter extraction technique for organic soils, columnar monoliths up to a diameter of 200 mm can be extracted by vertical stabbing. The extraction technique consists of an easily adjustable base frame, a cylindrical rotating cutting tube and the tubular cartridge to hold the cut bog body. Ground anchors guarantee a safe stand of the device even on boggy soils.

The cutting elements on the underside of the cutting tube cut through the vegetation cover and also organic deposits, such as roots, without shifting their position. This preserves the natural structure of the bog body. An adjustable vacuum in the cartridge tube above the bog column prevents aqueous substrates from flowing out. In addition to the substrate response, laboratory and field experiments can be carried out on the large-volume, undisturbed bog columns to investigate mass transfer processes and microbial changes, as well as tracer experiments in relation to different degrees of bog drainage.
