UGT S21 Suction probe with ceramic tip, acrylic glass standpipe and angled hose connection

The S21 suction probe is equipped with an acrylic glass standpipe up to 100 cm long, into which a ceramic tip (P80; Ø20 x 50 mm) is tightly glued. At the end of the standpipe, there is an angled connector that is sealed with PTFE thread sealing tape and suitable for hoses with an inner diameter of 6 mm. It should be noted that the design of the suction probe does not prevent percolate from being sucked back into the soil during dry periods.

How it works

A vacuum is applied throughout the standpipe to extract soil water. This design allows for optimal use of the standpipe volume, efficiently drawing water from the soil. This promotes a uniform water extraction, independent of the power of the pump used. At the same time, the standpipe serves as a temporary storage for the soil water, which remains under the prevailing soil temperatures before it is collected in a connected sample bottle.

The suction probe is suitable for both permanent constant vacuum in combination with a suction probe system and for single exposure to a vacuum. The prepared hose connections allow operation with all commercially available hand pumps, electronic pumps and vacuum control units.

Use of a groove auger during installation

For optimal installation of the suction probe in the soil, we recommend using a suitable groove auger. This tool is used to pre-drill a hole with a diameter that is slightly smaller than that of the suction probe. A diameter that is too large can favor preferential flow paths along the suction probe, causing additional water to be directed to the suction cup. This could falsify the measurement results. The appropriate pre-drill not only makes installation easier, but also ensures a proper connection between the suction probe and the surrounding soil, which ensures precise sampling.
