UGT Lysimeter sampling technology for organic soils
Special lysimeter vessels have been developed for the challenges that organic soils, especially bogs, pose to monolith recovery. Large organic soil monoliths can be examined with the bog lysimeter. The lysimeter vessel for this purpose is trough-shaped, 4 m long, 1 m wide and 1.5 m deep. The length of 4 m allows the observation of the lateral flow processes often observed in peat soils.
To obtain the soil monolith, this vessel is sunk with its face open into a launch pit, from where it is pushed horizontally into the bog soil on a guide system. To minimize soil disturbance, the soil monolith is precut with a cutting device on the face of the vessel. After the extraction process is complete, the lysimeter vessel is lifted out of the pit and sealed for transport in such a way that the soil cannot shift.
