UGT Overhead-shaker
UGT Overhead-shaker
The Overhead-shaker, also known as an end-over-end shaker, automates the homogenization process for a large number of samples. To do this, one or more bottle magazines are loaded with sample bottles and clamped into one or two rotating chambers with padded lids. The speed of up to 30 revolutions per minute can be continuously adjusted via the display. Higher speeds are also possible depending on the model size and customer requirements.
The continuous movement mixes the sample contents homogeneously, which, among other things, prepares the samples for use in KÖHN analysis, but is also the starting point for many chemical analyses. The Overhead-shaker from UGT is characterized by the high number of sample positions. In the standard version, 72 sample bottles of 100 ml each or 60 sample bottles of 250 ml each can be clamped into a magazine.
On request, we are also happy to manufacture special versions with more sample positions or magazines with customer-specific sample positions, such as laboratory syringes.
Background: Homogenization of soil samples
The homogenization of soil samples is a crucial step in soil analysis, enabling accurate and representative characterization of the soil. Soil samples are extremely heterogeneous, as they contain various components such as organic matter, minerals, water, and air. In order to obtain a reliable assessment of soil quality and composition, it is essential to homogenize soil samples. The homogenization of soil samples is important for the following reasons:
- Ensures representativeness: Soil samples are often taken from different areas of a soil profile, study area, or region. These areas may have different soil properties. Homogenization distributes the different components evenly to obtain a representative sample that reflects the entirety of the analyzed area.
- Avoids bias: Without homogenization, soil samples can be unevenly distributed, leading to bias in the analysis results. For example, if one sample comes from an area with higher organic matter and another from a mineral-rich area, analysis without homogenization could lead to inaccurate results.
- Consistent data for comparisons: Research or monitoring projects often require the comparison of soil samples over a specific period of time. Homogenization ensures that the samples being compared are consistent in their overall composition, enabling reliable and meaningful comparisons.
- Optimization of laboratory capacities: Due to limited capacities, laboratories often perform soil analyses on sub-samples of the total sample. Homogenized samples ensure that each sub-sample is representative, resulting in more accurate and reliable laboratory data.
- Cost efficiency: A homogenized soil sample allows for a more accurate determination of the actual amount of sample required for analysis. This helps to optimize analysis costs and use resources more efficiently.
In summary, the homogenization of soil samples forms the basis for a precise assessment of soil quality and is of crucial importance for agricultural practices, environmental monitoring, and scientific research in the field of soil science.
