UGT Urban Runoff Simulator

Investigation of Surface Runoff under Controlled Laboratory Conditions

The Urban Runoff Simulator is a measurement system for the recording, quantification, and optional sampling of surface runoff under laboratory conditions. The system has been specifically developed for studies of urban rainfall runoff and enables the realistic simulation of surface runoff on different substrates and surfaces.

Operating Principle

The system is based on a PE catch trough with a footprint of 980 × 1000 mm, a central drainage channel, and a defined slope. The catch trough is filled with the substrate or surface material to be investigated. Artificial rainfall events are generated via movable drip lines. The water input can be precisely adjusted and monitored.

The surface runoff generated in the catch trough is gathered via the central drainage channel and directed to a stainless-steel tipping counter. This device continuously records the runoff volume and enables high-resolution temporal quantification of surface runoff. Upon request, automatic sampling of the collected surface water via the connected tipping counter is also available.

Typical Applications

  • Investigation of urban surface runoff
  • Transport of pollutants, microplastics, or PFAS via surface water
  • Influence of different soil and surface materials on runoff behavior
  • Studies on sediment and contaminant transport
  • Development and evaluation of stormwater management measures
  • Research and teaching in hydrology, environmental sciences, and water resources engineering

Notes

An external water reservoir, e.g. an IBC container, is required for water supply. The reservoir is provided by the customer. A suitable connection adapter is included in the delivery.
